This weekend, six students were selected to represent Delwood at the Coe College Elementary Honor Band in Cedar Rapids! Throughout the day, they had the opportunity to rehearse with guest conductors Adrian Sims and Kim Benson, as well as students from several other schools in Eastern Iowa. They worked hard to prepare their music and put on a great concert! Congratulations to the following students on a wonderful performance!:

5th Grade:
Porter (Tuba)
Zoey (Flute)
Isabella (Flute)

6th Grade:
Owein (Baritone)
Krystin (Flute)

Fourth grade has been practicing how to take creative risks in the art room! Often artists do not create artworks with a preconceived plan. Instead most artists start with a vague idea and allow it to grow and change as they work, leaving ample room for creative risk taking! During an in class activity, students were given 2 minutes to fill as many sticky notes as possible with things from 4 different categories: living things, non-living things, places, and visual characteristics. They were then given one random sticky note from each category. They were tasked with using those sticky notes to create a new artwork that included all four things. It challenged them to think differently about their work, combine ideas, and problem solve to create a successful artwork!

Our 1st graders had a fun and engaging time in STEM exploring shadows! They worked together to trace and outline their shadows, noticing how they changed based on the sun. It was a great hands-on way to learn and discover how the sun's position in the sky determines shadow direction. They learned that shadows are cast on the opposite side from the way the sun's rays are directed and when the pole blocks light from the Sun as it moves.

In Mrs. Doll's room, we’ve been working on repeated readings and reader’s theater to strengthen our reading skills during mClass, and the growth has been so exciting to watch. Through repeated practice with meaningful text, students are building fluency, improving accuracy, and developing expression and tone. They’re learning that reading isn’t just about saying the words correctly—it’s about making the text sound like natural, meaningful language. Each reread helps them become more confident, more automatic, and more aware of how their voice brings a story to life.

To celebrate their hard work, students had the opportunity to perform their play for other teachers and students in our building. Experiences like this not only strengthens their reading abilities but also builds confidence, teamwork, and a genuine love for reading. We couldn’t be more proud of their effort and growth!

Miss Till and Miss Pam have been working with a small group of TK and Kindergarten students reading the book Again!. During our time together, we have focused on four key vocabulary words from the story, as well as practicing important comprehension skills by identifying the who, what, where, and when. The students especially loved the ending when the dragon blew a hole in the book!

Across all groups, we have also been using Story Champs to strengthen comprehension skills. Students have been working on understanding vocabulary by completing graphic organizers, writing key words, and drawing pictures to help deepen their understanding.

Kindergarten through 2nd grade groups have been practicing writing detailed sentences. We look at pictures from stories and identify the who, the action (verb), and the where, then use that information to create complete sentences.

Our TK and Kindergarten students explored how we use water in our everyday lives before becoming engineers and creating their own rain gauges!

Students practiced making observations and talking about how we can measure rainfall. It was exciting to see their curiosity grow as they connected science to the world around them.

Our preschool students have been exploring the weather by learning about things like sunshine, rain, wind, and clouds. We discussed the water cycle in a simple way—how water falls as rain, collects in puddles or lakes, and then dries up and goes back into the sky. Children learn that wind can’t be seen, but we know it’s there because it moves trees, flags, and leaves. They also observed different types of clouds and begin to understand that certain clouds can bring rain when they become heavy with water. Students explored these weather concepts through simple, hands-on experiments that allowed them to see the water cycle, observe how wind moves objects, and model how clouds form and produce rain.
