Crawdads, mosquitos, and frogs oh my! Last week, 3rd and 4th grade students had the opportunity to brainstorm ideas to add some visual flair to their concert music. With ideas ranging from holding stars, staff in costume, marching off stage, and suspending friends from the ceiling, we certainly had some colorful conversation! We worked together to combine actions and visual ideas to allow students to present their own creative takes on the songs. We are excited to perform for our school and community this Thursday, May 7th!

This year at Delwood, we proudly implemented Genius Hour—a time dedicated to fostering student passion, creativity, and inquiry through self-directed, passion-based projects.
Throughout the year, Mrs. DeMoss has had the incredible opportunity to lead two amazing groups: 3-D Pens and Paper Crafts! Watching students explore their creativity and showcase their unique talents has been truly inspiring.
From imaginative designs to hands-on creations, these students have absolutely thrived—and had a blast doing it! We are proud of their hard work, creativity, and willingness to try new things.

🎉✨ Flashlight Friday Fun! ✨🎉
Mrs. Kieffer’s third grade class did it—they filled up their marble jar and earned their well-deserved reward: Flashlight Friday! 🔦📚
Through teamwork, kindness, and hard work, this class showed what it means to support one another and stay focused on their goals. Recently, they got to cozy up with a good book and read by flashlight—a simple reward that felt extra special because they earned it together.
So proud of them for their positive choices and classroom spirit. Keep shining bright, third grade! 💛

Teachers used synergy or creative cooperation to make a springtime poster. In our professional development session in March, teachers reviewed Leader in Me Habit #6 Synergy . Synergy means to value differences in people. By working through differences, leaders can discover a variety of options and solutions based on how people think. Leaders rely on teamwork, win-win thinking and empathic listening to complete projects. Through these habits, leaders can develop trust and openness to sharing ideas. The teachers used this creative cooperation strategy to complete a springtime wall display for the 5th/6th grade hallway. Each teacher was given a coloring page and then had to seek out peers who had adjacent pages to work together to make the wall hanging cohesive. After individual pages were complete, they we’re connected together to showcase how individual talent comes together to make an outstanding creation.

We had a great time during our Tattoo the Teacher fundraiser hosted by our PTO to raise money for our playground project.
Students had the opportunity to buy temporary tattoos for their teachers, and our staff proudly wore their designs throughout the day. It was a simple, fun way to raise money and have fun!
Thank you to everyone who participated and supported this event. We appreciate your help in making it a success.

Our 2nd graders got their hands a little messy for a great cause today 🌱💚
To celebrate Earth Day, students created eco-friendly seed bombs made from recycled paper pulp and flower seeds. They learned how repurposing materials can help the environment while also planting something beautiful for pollinators and our community.
We can’t wait to see what blooms! 🌼🌍

This weekend, six students were selected to represent Delwood at the Coe College Elementary Honor Band in Cedar Rapids! Throughout the day, they had the opportunity to rehearse with guest conductors Adrian Sims and Kim Benson, as well as students from several other schools in Eastern Iowa. They worked hard to prepare their music and put on a great concert! Congratulations to the following students on a wonderful performance!:
Fourth grade has been practicing how to take creative risks in the art room! Often artists do not create artworks with a preconceived plan. Instead most artists start with a vague idea and allow it to grow and change as they work, leaving ample room for creative risk taking! During an in class activity, students were given 2 minutes to fill as many sticky notes as possible with things from 4 different categories: living things, non-living things, places, and visual characteristics. They were then given one random sticky note from each category. They were tasked with using those sticky notes to create a new artwork that included all four things. It challenged them to think differently about their work, combine ideas, and problem solve to create a successful artwork!

Our 1st graders had a fun and engaging time in STEM exploring shadows! They worked together to trace and outline their shadows, noticing how they changed based on the sun. It was a great hands-on way to learn and discover how the sun's position in the sky determines shadow direction. They learned that shadows are cast on the opposite side from the way the sun's rays are directed and when the pole blocks light from the Sun as it moves.

In Mrs. Doll's room, we’ve been working on repeated readings and reader’s theater to strengthen our reading skills during mClass, and the growth has been so exciting to watch. Through repeated practice with meaningful text, students are building fluency, improving accuracy, and developing expression and tone. They’re learning that reading isn’t just about saying the words correctly—it’s about making the text sound like natural, meaningful language. Each reread helps them become more confident, more automatic, and more aware of how their voice brings a story to life.
To celebrate their hard work, students had the opportunity to perform their play for other teachers and students in our building. Experiences like this not only strengthens their reading abilities but also builds confidence, teamwork, and a genuine love for reading. We couldn’t be more proud of their effort and growth!
