Students in Ms. Cathy's preschool class painted a Little Blue penguin, which is the smallest penguin, and an Emperor penguin, which is the tallest penguin. Then they compared their height to the heights of these penguins. Students also learned about Macaroni penguins.

Students aren't the only ones who enjoy it when someone reads them a book. Some of our staff members were treated to a story read by one of our preschool students this week. He did a great job!

Our preschool students have been learning about penguins. They practiced balancing an egg on their feet, like the male Emperor penguin does while the female goes out to sea for food.

Our first graders had some STEM fun last week building towers!

Students have been enjoying PE class on the slopes! Exercise comes in all forms and from the looks of it, these students are having a great time getting their daily workout.

Our kindergarten class spent their time with Jess Wagner using words like soft, bumpy, smooth and hard to describe items found in nature. Then they sorted some items using a Venn diagram.

The Delwood School will have a two hour late start on Wednesday, January 26 due to low temperatures. There will be no early dismissal for students. Stay posted for any additional updates on a possible school closure.

Due to extremely low temperatures predicted for tomorrow morning, Tuesday, January 25, the Delwood School will be having a two hour delay.

One of our sixth grade students, Thomas, has been chosen as an honored kid for the Maquoketa High School Dance Marathon, which helps raise money for the University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital. Dance Marathon is on March 19th from 5:00-10:00PM at Maquoketa High School.
Thomas is 12 years old and was born at 30 weeks. He weighed 3 pounds, 12 ounces. Thomas spent the first two months of his life in the NICU. When he was able to come home, he was on oxygen and a heart monitor.
Thomas is seeking sponsors to help him raise money through the purchase of t-shirts.

Our second grade class enjoyed some time with Jess Wagner from the Hurstville Interpretive Center last week. They learned about keeping pollutants out of our water so we have clean, fresh water in our homes.

Mrs. Kieffer's third grade class finished a unit on forces and motion, which included the creation of a skate park. Groups were responsible for making an obstacle for the park and had to answer the following questions: where would the skater apply a force, what would slow the skater down after completing the obstacle (think foam pits and bumps) and what pattern of motion would be displayed in your obstacle? Students tested out the park with mini skateboards!

The creativity of our students never ceases to amaze us! Take a look at this creation two of our kindergarten students recently made.

Our third grade class recently had a "Vocabulary Museum" where students walked around the room and looked at the "Vocabulary Exhibits." We don't usually encourage writing on desks, but do occasionally make exceptions! Students used their dry erase markers and wrote predictions on what word they thought the creator was representing. Mrs. Kieffer noted that most of their predictions were correct!

Reminder:
No school on Monday, January 17th.

As a precaution the Delwood School will be dismissing two hours early today, Friday, January 14 due to projected snowfall and poor road conditions. There will be no after school programming. Travel safely.

We appreciate it when our staff members are willing to jump in and help out when needed. This week, Val, our school nurse, volunteered to help serve lunch! In case you didn't know, working in a school cafeteria is Val's dream job!
We also have a group of sixth grade students who have volunteered to wipe the cafeteria tables everyday for the rest of the school year!

The Delwood School will be delayed two hours tomorrow, Friday, January 7 due to extremely low temperatures. Thank you.

Despite our best efforts, we will need to cancel school today due to concerning road conditions throughout the day. Thanks.

The Delwood School will have a 2 hour delay today, Wednesday, January 5 due to drifting snow on roads and decreased visibility. Please travel safely.

Our students have enjoyed some fun activities over the last few days, one of which was the annual teachers versus students dodge ball game.
